From the beginnings up to the present:

  • In 1994, Safestreet is founded to deal with the management of transportation and the built environment, especially road safety and traffic calming. Paul Mackey is assisted by a team of experienced professionals, of whom Jean-Marie Beaudoin and Gilles Robitaille are still with the firm.
  • From 1995 to 2001, Paul Mackey wrote most of the Manual for Setting Speed Limits on Municipal Road Networks, published by the Quebec Ministry of Transportation and reprinted by the Ministry of Transportation in Wallonia (Belgium).
  • Until 1996, Paul Mackey is a member of the Steering Committee of the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) that prepared the Urban Supplement to the Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads, the first official document in Canada that includes traffic calming.
  • In 1997-1998, he is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Canadian Guide to Neighbourhood Traffic Calming, which Safestreet translated into French.
  • In 2000, the Quebec Ministry of Transportation publishes the guide “Aménagements routiers dans la traverse des agglomérations” (“Context Sensitive Highway Design Through Towns”), to which he contributed.
  • In 2004, he is recognized by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) as a Subject Matter Expert in the fields of pedestrians and cyclists safety, geometric design, speed management and road safety.
  • In 2005, the Highway Safety Branch of the Quebec Ministry of Transportation recognizes Safestreet’s “exceptional expertise in traffic calming.”
  • In 2008, ITE publishes the Urban Street Geometric Design Handbook. Paul Mackey is the author of the chapter on collector streets.
  • In 2009, the manual Planning and Design for Pedestrians and Cyclists is published, for which Safestreet provided the chapters on pedestrians and on traffic calming.
  • In 2008-2009, Paul Mackey was invited to sit on the Scientific Committee for the Green, Active and Healthy Neighbourhood project, organized by the Montreal Urban Ecology Center.
  • In 2011-2012, Paul Mackey is a member of the Advisory Committee for the project to prepare Briefing Sheets on engineering treatments to improve safety for elementary school students for the National Center for Safe Routes to School in the United States.
  • In 2011 and 2013, he is invited by the Montreal Regional Environment Council to participate on the jury of the “Towards User-Friendly Streets” competition.
  • In 2012, the quality of Safestreet’s outreach to citizens is underlined by the City of Dieppe (NB) during the TAC Annual Conference.
Into the future...

Since its beginning, Safestreet has worked throughout Quebec and elsewhere, on 152 street redesign projects in 72 municipalities in all regions of Quebec and New Brunswick, of which 22 have rehired us at least once. These projects have dealt with local and collector streets, arterials, highways, through towns, rural roads, roundabouts and cycling infrastructure. Over the years, the firm has broadened its field of work to include barrier free design (for the handicapped and the elderly), storm-water management, noise, winter maintenance, active transportation and urban design. Safestreet takes an integrated approach to streets!
