Barrier-Free Design and Seniors’ Transportation

Canada will see a substantial increase in the number of the elderly, who have specific needs that often parallel the needs of persons with disabilities. Part of their mobility can be provided by para-transit (accessible buses and taxis), but it is also necessary to rethink the design of the street.

Safestreet takes special care in the design of sidewalks and crosswalks in order to take into account the needs of people with limited mobility. For the elderly, it is imperative to eliminate or soften all slopes. We have recommended solutions that have been adopted by our clients, such as raised intersections, tactile warning strips for the sight-impaired and the treatment of joints in concrete sidewalks to eliminate the jolts felt by people in wheelchairs, and one of our projects has been highlighted by the Institute of Transportation Engineers. We are also working with the Quebec Ministry of Transportation and Sustainable Mobility and the Transportation Association of Canada to have standards improved.
