Barrier-Free Design and Seniors’ Transportation

The Western world will see a substantial increase in the number of the elderly, who have specific needs that often parallel the needs of persons with disabilities. Part of their mobility can be provided by para-transit (accessible buses and taxis), but it is also necessary to rethink the design of the street.

Safestreet has submitted the framework for the redesign of la Madone Street to create a completely level path between a long term healthcare facility and shops along this heritage main street. The recommendations include a raised intersection, a raised crosswalk, the removal of two outdated driveway entraces and the treatment of concrete joints in the sidewalk to eliminate jolts for wheelchairs. Safestreet also is seeking to encourage the use of truncated domes for persons with visual disabilities.
